Liposuction at Cosmos Clinic

Vaser liposuction is a surgical procedure designed to remove excess fat cells from specific areas of the body. It may be considered for patients with excess fat that has not responded to diet and exercise. Suitability is determined on a case-by-case basis, and outcomes may vary between individuals.

    Liposuction Essential Information

    How is Liposuction Performed?

Liposuction is typically carried out under twilight sedation or general anaesthesia. In some cases, local anaesthetic is used for smaller areas. A special fluid, known as tumescent anaesthesia, is injected through small incisions to numb the area, reduce blood loss, and assist with fat removal. This fluid also shrinks blood vessels, which can minimise risks. Advanced techniques, such as Vaser Liposuction, use ultrasound technology to target fat deposits, making the process more precise.

    Who is Suitable for Liposuction?

Liposuction is for reducing fat in targeted areas, not for weight loss. Candidates should be in good health, close to their ideal weight, and have realistic expectations. A maximum of 5 litres of fat can be removed in one session, in line with safety guidelines. If needed, additional sessions can be arranged after a week.

    Potential Areas for Liposuction

Liposuction is typically performed on the:

    • For Men: Chest, abdomen, and lower back.
    • For Women: Abdomen, back, arms, hips, and thighs.

    Post-Liposuction Care

    • Compression Garments: Must be worn for six weeks (three weeks full-time, three weeks part-time) to reduce swelling and help the skin adapt.
    • Pain Management: Medications are provided to manage discomfort.
    • Lymphatic Massage: Recommended starting the day after surgery, with at least four sessions spaced 2–3 days apart.

    LIPOSUCTION FAQs

Am I a candidate for liposuction?

You may be a candidate for our liposuction procedures if you fit the following criteria:

    • You are in good physical and mental health
    • You have realistic expectations regarding what liposuction surgery can achieve
    • You are at a healthy, stable weight
    • You have good skin elasticity
    • You do not smoke or are prepared to quit before and after surgery

The best way to determine whether you are a candidate is to meet with our Cosmos Clinic team.

Is there anything I should consider before undergoing liposuction?

Before undergoing any form of cosmetic surgery, you should take the time to carefully consider whether liposuction is right for you. Take a look at your health habits: are you prepared to change your diet and exercise habits after surgery to maintain your results? Other questions to consider include: are you prepared to wait for your results to appear? Are you prepared to quit smoking in the weeks before and after surgery? Before you decide to proceed with surgery, you should talk with one of our liposuction doctors, who can give you an honest opinion about whether the procedure is right for you.

How do I prepare for liposuction surgery?

During your consultation at Cosmos Clinic, your liposuction doctor will give you specific instructions on how to prepare for surgery. If you smoke, it is critical that you stop at least two weeks before surgery, as smoking can increase surgical complications and slow healing. In addition, you may be asked to avoid certain medications and supplements to prevent excessive bleeding and bruising during and after your liposuction procedure. We highly recommend preparing for your recovery before surgery by purchasing comfortable clothing, filling prescriptions, cooking healthy meals and arranging for someone to pick you up from the hospital and assist you for the first few days at home.

What can I expect during my liposuction recovery?

Following your Vaser liposuction procedure, you can expect some bruising, swelling and pain in the target area. This is normal and can be relieved with pain medication. The treated area will likely weep fluid for 24 to 48 hours after surgery, which can be dressed with sterilised cotton pads. To flush the anaesthesia from your body completely, you may need to drink extra fluids.

You should expect to spend at least a week at home to recover after liposuction surgery. After this time, you should be able to resume most normal activities, with the exception of strenuous exercise. To alleviate swelling and help your body heal, you will need to wear a compression garment for around six weeks.

Please keep in mind that you won’t be able to see your liposuction results immediately after the procedure. To ensure the best outcome, you should carefully follow all of your doctor’s aftercare instructions.

How long does the procedure take?

Typically, a liposuction procedure can take anywhere from one to four hours, depending on the amount of adipose tissue that needs to be removed.

Do I need more than one session?

This depends on a number of factors, including how much fat is removed during the initial liposuction session, your desired outcome and expectations. Although our experienced doctors always strive to achieve the best possible fat reduction the first time around, in some cases, additional sessions may be required.

    Does liposuction treat obesity?

No, liposuction does not treat obesity; however, our Mega Liposuction technique can help overweight patients lose considerable amounts of fat.

Do I need to be a certain weight to have liposuction?

While there are no specific weight restrictions to undergo a liposuction or liposculpture procedure, you should reach a healthy, stable weight before considering surgery. Any major weight fluctuations after your procedure can stretch the skin and alter your liposuction results.

Liposuction is not a weight-loss procedure and should only be used to address excess fat that exercise and diet have not been able to remove. Considering this, if you are within the overweight or obese weight range, we’d recommend losing weight before surgery.

    Are liposuction results permanent?

Liposuction results can be permanent, in the sense that once the fat cells are removed, they cannot return. However, the remaining fat cells can still grow in size, meaning that it is still possible to regain weight in the future, although likely in different areas of the body.

You should keep in mind that external factors can also impact your results. Liposuction does not pause the ageing process, and things like inflammation, weight fluctuations and gravity can all affect the way your results look over time.

How much scarring will I have after liposuction?

Significant scarring is uncommon following a liposuction procedure, as the incisions required to insert the cannulas under the skin are small. You can minimise scarring by keeping wounds clean, staying hydrated and keeping incision sites out of direct sunlight.

Are there any alternatives to liposuction?

If you are not yet ready or willing to commit to surgery, there are some non-surgical fat removal treatments that provide an alternative to liposuction. Such treatments use energy, whether that be sound waves, light waves, radio waves or exposure to cold, to damage and shrink fat cells. While these techniques are more affordable and less invasive than liposuction surgery, they do not produce the same results.
