What is the neck lift with liposuction?

The double chin (medical name is submental fullness) is a common concern for women and men alike. It can result from being overweight or due to ageing or genetics even in people who are thin. If you’d like to improve the appearance of your chin, neck and jawline without surgery and the accompanying recovery and downtime, a neck lift with Liposuction may be right for you.

VASER Liposuction is used with the intention of addressing stubborn fat cells and may contribute to skin tightening. Tightening (during and after treatment) is achieved thanks to a special ultrasound-emitting probe that helps to stimulate collagen fibres underneath the skin.

How is the neck lift procedure with lipo performed?

At Cosmos Aesthetics Sydney, we use Vaser liposuction technology to perform all of our liposuction procedures. A Vaser neck lift with liposuction is considered a less invasive procedure than other methods, as it requires only small incisions and allows for a gentler fat removal process.

On the day of your procedure, you’ll be given medication (twilight sedation and local anaesthesia) to help you relax and to control any pain and discomfort. A small incision will be made under the chin, followed by an ultrasound probe being inserted to break down the fat tissue.

The liquefied fat cells will then be extracted using a small cannula and the chin and neck area contoured using a gentle liposuction technique. The method of liquifying the stubborn fat cells first prevents damage to the surrounding tissues of the neck during removal. At the same time, the heat from the ultrasound energy stimulates a skin tightening response, causing the skin to retract and conform to the slimmer neck shape.

Depending on the amount of fat that needs to be removed, the procedure usually takes about one hour to perform.

How should I prepare for my neck lift and neck liposuction procedure?

Each patient will be provided with preparation instructions during their consultation. These instructions usually include avoiding specific medications and supplements that can negatively affect the healing process during recovery. To feel prepared for your procedure, we suggest ensuring that you have loose and comfortable clothing to wear during your recovery, and organise transport after your procedure as you will not be able to drive straight after treatment.

Will I feel any pain during the neck liposuction procedure?

Neck liposuction with Vaser technology is performed with twilight sedation and local anaesthetic, which will numb the area during the procedure.

What to expect after the procedure?

Thanks to the minimally invasive nature of the procedure, patients will not be required to stay in hospital and are able to return home on the day of the procedure. You’ll be required to wear a compression garment immediately after surgery, for three days full time and then seven days part time, to minimise swelling, promote blood circulation and to assist with the healing process. It’s normal to experience some swelling for about three to seven days but the downtime is minimal and patients can typically return to work after one week (rigorous exercise should be avoided for a few weeks).

You may experience some mild pain and discomfort, but this is normal and your doctor can prescribe pain medication to help you manage during recovery. Neck liposuction can cause swelling around the area after the procedure, but this will subside during the recovery process. To reduce swelling, you can try to sleep with your head elevated on an extra pillow for about one week after your procedure.

Recovery time from a neck lift with liposuction is quite minimal, as most patients are able to return to work or their usual daily activities after three to five days. You will be given personalised recovery instructions during your consultation at Cosmos Aesthetics Sydney. Generally, these instructions will include to:

Wear a liposuction compression garment to help reduce swelling and promote sufficient healing
Care for your surgical sites as instructed
Follow a healthy diet
Listen to your body and report any concerning signs to your doctor
Attend your post-surgical check-ups

How soon can I see results?

Results can become noticeable after about one week, however, it can take several weeks for swelling to subside. Results also improve over time as the skin tightening process takes place. Typically, patients can see their final results at about six months after the procedure.

What are the potential complications?

Complications with neck liposuction tend to be relatively minor, as chin and neck liposuction with Vaser technology is a less invasive procedure than traditional liposuction methods. However, any medical procedure has some risks associated with them. The potential complications of a neck lift with liposuction can include:

Will I have excess skin on my neck after the procedure?

Vaser tightens the skin with ultrasound technology, which can prevent excess skin from becoming noticeable after the procedure.

What is the difference between neck liposuction and liposuction that is performed on the body?

The Vaser liposuction method is the same on the body as it is on the neck, however, neck liposuction is associated with a faster recovery time as less fat is removed. Swelling typically subsides faster, as the neck sits above the heart.

How long do the results last?

The effects of liposuction are considered permanent as the fat cells will not grow back. Keep in mind, however, that fluctuations in weight can affect the results. Patients are advised to follow a healthy lifestyle and keep their weight in the normal range after the procedure. Furthermore, our skin continues to age and over time so some of the skin laxity can come back in a couple of years.
