THE PROCEDURE EXPLAINED
Abdominoplasty is a surgical procedure focused on removing excess skin and tissue from the abdominal area. It is commonly performed to address concerns resulting from significant weight changes, pregnancy, or ageing. In addition to removing excess skin, the procedure can involve the repair of separated or weakened abdominal muscles, improving core stability and functionality.
This procedure may be suitable for individuals who:
Abdominoplasty typically involves making an incision along the lower abdominal area to remove excess skin and fat. The surgeon may also tighten the underlying abdominal muscles if necessary. The incision is closed with sutures, and post-operative care includes wearing compression garments and following recovery guidelines provided by the surgeon.
ABDOMINOPLASTY RECOVERY
Recovery from abdominoplasty varies depending on the extent of the procedure and individual factors. Typically, patients will need around 2–4 weeks to resume light activities and work, but strenuous activities and heavy lifting should be avoided for at least 6 weeks or as advised by your surgeon. You’ll be required to wear compression garments to help with swelling and support the healing process.
It’s normal to experience some swelling and tightness in the abdominal area in the weeks following surgery. These will gradually subside, but patience is key as the healing process takes time. While you may notice some changes in your abdomen shortly after the procedure, the final results are typically visible around 3–6 months post-surgery, once swelling has resolved and the tissues have fully settled. Scars will fade over time, but they won’t disappear completely. Following your surgeon’s scar management recommendations can help them become less noticeable.
As with any surgical procedure, abdominoplasty carries certain risks. While most patients recover without significant complications, it’s important to be aware of potential issues, including:
Your surgeon will discuss these risks with you in detail during your consultation and provide guidance to minimise them. Following all pre- and post-operative instructions is crucial for a smooth recovery and the best possible results.
