    THE TREATMENT

About Lip Filler, Costs & Considerations

    What is Lip Filler Treatment?

Lip filler treatment involves injecting the lips with a gel-like substance designed to address specific structural aspects of the lips. The filler material contains hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring molecule in the body responsible for water retention and skin hydration. When injected, it changes the lip shape and structure by improving tissue hydration and support.

    Why Consider Lip Filler Treatment?

The decision to undergo lip filler treatment is highly individual and should be made after a thorough consultation with a qualified medical professional. Some of the considerations include:

    • Most lip filler procedures take between 15 to 30 minutes.
    • Results are not permanent, offering flexibility for those unsure about long-term changes.
    • Results are often visible immediately after the procedure.
    • The procedure does not require surgery or significant recovery time.

What to Look for in an Injectables Provider

When considering lip filler treatments, it’s crucial to choose a qualified and experienced injector:

    • Ensure your provider is registered with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) and is a member of relevant professional organisations, such as the Cosmetic Physicians College of Australasia (CPCA).
    • Look for providers with extensive training and experience in cosmetic injectables.
    • Review before-and-after photos of previous patients to ensure the results align with your needs.

    Important Considerations

    • Potential Side Effects: These may include swelling, redness, or tenderness at the injection site, which usually resolves within a few days.
    • Not Permanent: The body gradually breaks down the filler over time, meaning results will diminish unless maintained with follow-up treatments.
    • Individualised Approach: Outcomes depend on the injector’s skill and the patient’s unique anatomy, making proper consultation essential.

How Much Does Lip Filler Cost?

The cost of lip filler in Australia varies based on several factors, including the type of filler used, the practitioner’s expertise, and the clinic’s location. On average, patients can expect to pay between $350 and $800 per milliliter of filler. It’s important to note that the total cost will depend on the amount of filler required.

    POST TREATMENT

What to expect after lip filler treatment

While most lip filler treatments are a walk in/walk out procedure, you can expect the following post-procedure.

    • Swelling and Tenderness: It’s common to experience some swelling, redness, and tenderness around the injection sites. This typically subsides within 24–48 hours but may last a bit longer for some individuals.
    • Bruising: Mild bruising may occur at the injection points. It usually fades within a few days to a week.
    • Initial Fullness: Lips may appear fuller than expected immediately after the procedure due to swelling and the initial effects of the filler.

    Short-Term Recovery:

    • Healing Timeline: Most side effects resolve within a week. Your final results will become more apparent as the swelling decreases.
    • Discomfort: You might feel slight discomfort or tightness, which should subside as your lips adjust to the filler.
    • Hydration: Keeping your lips hydrated with a non-irritating balm can help improve comfort during healing.

    Longer-Term Results:

    • Settling Time: It may take up to two weeks for the filler to settle and integrate fully, allowing the final appearance to become evident.
    • Duration of Results: Depending on the type of filler and individual metabolism, results can last 6–12 months or longer.

    Aftercare Tips

    1. Avoid Pressure: Avoid pressing, massaging, or applying heavy pressure to the treated area for at least 24 hours.
    2. Limit Heat Exposure: Refrain from using saunas, hot tubs, or engaging in intense exercise for the first 48 hours to reduce swelling.
    3. Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water to help the filler settle and maintain lip hydration.
    4. Avoid Alcohol and Blood Thinners: These can increase the likelihood of bruising and swelling.
    5. Makeup: Avoid applying makeup to the lips for 24 hours post-treatment to minimise infection risk.

    When to Contact Your Practitioner:

    • If you experience prolonged swelling, pain, or unusual lumps.
    • If signs of infection appear, such as fever or redness that worsens.
    • If you notice significant asymmetry that doesn’t settle after the initial swelling subsides.

*Results may vary from patient to patient.
**All photos are of patients from Cosmos Aesthetics, and all ‘after’ images are taken 6 weeks post operation.

What brands of lip filler do you use?

Advertising guidelines in Australia prohibit us from stating which product brands we use. Since it is classified as prescription medicine, only a doctor can prescribe lip filler. Given this, you must have a consultation at our clinic to determine whether lip injections are suitable for you.

Does lip filler have any side effects?

Just like any other medical procedure, there are some temporary side effects to be aware of, including swelling, redness, and bruising. These normally resolve within a few hours or days.

Some patients may develop some rarer complications, such as infection or lumps. The product can be dissolved with a special enzyme in cases where patients need to reverse the product to address these complications.

In some extremely rare cases, the product can be injected into the blood vessels instead of beneath the skin. This can block blood supply and lead to skin death and, in severe cases, blindness.

How long does lip filler last?

Lip filler is not permanent, and will eventually be absorbed by the body. How fast this happens will depend on factors such as the type of product used and your skin type, lifestyle, and age. Generally, you can expect lip filler to last for around six months, although some patients metabolise the product quicker or slower than this.
