GYNECOMASTIA SURGERY AT COSMOS AESTHETICS SYDNEY

    Considering the Procedure

Who is a good candidate for male breast reduction surgery?

Suitability is determined by the doctor during the initial consultations, and good candidates for gynaecomastia surgery may include:

    • If you are self-conscious about having visible unwanted breast tissue.
    • If you suffer from “man boobs” which can’t be corrected with diet or exercise.
    • If you are in good health without any serious pre-existing medical conditions.
    • If you are within a healthy weight range and have good skin elasticity.
    • If you have realistic expectations about the outcomes that can be achieved.
    • If the excess tissue in the chest is predominantly made up of fat, rather than gland.

How do I know if my gynaecomastia is caused by excess fat or excess breast tissue?

To determine the cause of your gynaecomastia, a comprehensive medical history is taken during the initial consultations, with a chest ultrasound always required. Detailed pathology tests to check for hormonal imbalances are also routinely performed.

Eligibility to be a good candidate for a male breast reduction procedure with liposuction is decided by the doctor. Depending on individual circumstances and other contributing factors, some patients may require corrective plastic surgery for glandular tissue excision under general anaesthesia with a specialist plastic surgeon.

Having a combination of both breast tissue and fatty tissue is the most common presentation, with excess breast tissue usually having a firmer and denser consistency in comparison to excess fat.

How much does gynaecomastia surgery cost in Sydney?

We understand that the cost of having cosmetic surgery is something patients consider. For gynaecomastia surgery using liposuction, prices will vary, and currently the procedure is not covered by Medicare rebates.

The cost at Cosmos Aesthetics Sydney for male breast reduction surgery with liposuction, starts from $5,500 for the base price, with any additional areas of liposuction charged at a reduced fee starting from a minimum $2,000 per area. These prices are just a guide and are not to be considered a quote. The total cost of a procedure can also include the following:

    • Consultation Fees
Prior to booking surgery your initial consultations will only incur a small fee ranging on average from $150 to $220 which covers the cost of both appointments.
    • Doctor and Anaesthetist Fees
The price of these fees will vary depending on the number of areas being treated, the complexity of your individual case, and the type of sedation used by the anaesthetist.
    • Hospital Fees
If applicable, any relevant hospital fees will be discussed with you during the initial consultations.

WHAT DOES “MAN BOOB” SURGERY INVOLVE

    Having the Procedure

How do I prepare for gynaecomastia surgery?

During your initial consultations, your doctor will explain having liposuction surgery with you in depth, provide you with pre and post-procedure information, and will also detail any necessary preparation steps you may need to take, including:

    • Having the necessary tests performed, including an ultrasound on your chest area to determine the cause of your breast enlargement.
    • Following a balanced diet and exercise regime to optimise your health before breast surgery.
    • Maintaining a stable weight, with no extreme weight loss or weight gain.
    • No smoking for at least four weeks before surgery and throughout the recovery period.
    • Organising comfortable shirts to wear over your compression garments.
    • Arranging for a responsible adult to collect you from the facility after having gynaecomastia surgery, to stay with you overnight, and all the following day.

Can I combine male breast reduction surgery with other areas?

To address gynaecomastia, our Sydney clinic uses Vaser Liposuction, which can be performed on multiple areas of the body within the same surgical procedure on approved candidates. Suitable patients who wish to remove excess fat from other areas of their bodies, can have additional areas treated along with their chest.

If this is an option you are interested in, you can discuss the possibility of treating more than one area during your initial consultations with the doctors. Treating multiple areas with Vaser Liposuction will increase the overall cost of surgery, and can extend your recovery time depending on the number and size of the areas being treated.

Is there any downtime after having “man boobs” surgery?

Swelling, bruising, tenderness, and discomfort, are all completely normal and to be expected after breast surgery. During the recovery period, patients are advised to follow detailed aftercare instructions, including wearing a compression garment, to aid in reducing swelling and supporting the healing process.

Attending the scheduled follow-up appointments, regular lymphatic drainage massages at our Sydney clinic, along with daily self-massages throughout the recovery period, will all support your healing process.

How long is the recovery time after surgery?

Each individual’s recovery experience after having cosmetic surgery will vary, with most patients able to resume light daily activities after around one week post-procedure. Strenuous exercise and heavy lifting should be avoided for approximately six weeks. This is just a guide and is not a guarantee.

When can I drive after having a surgical procedure?

Patients are not allowed to drive after having a procedure with liposuction. You must be collected from your gyno surgery by a responsible adult, who will stay with you overnight and all the following day. Additionally, due to the post-procedure medications routinely prescribed during the recovery period, it may be recommended patients wait up to a week after surgery to start driving on their own. Specific instructions for your individual case will be provided to you by the doctor.

When will I see the results from male breast reduction surgery?

Whilst some patients may see a difference following surgery, it is most common for the final results after gynecomastia surgery to take a few months to fully appear. Swelling commences right away and continues to fluctuate throughout the recovery period. Patients must follow all instructions and wear their compression garment as directed to support the healing process.

Most swelling fluctuations will have resolved around 2 months post-procedure, however for some patients, the final results from liposuction may not be visible for 3-6 months. During your recovery period, you must ensure to follow all the post-operative instructions from the doctor to optimise your healing and reduce the risk of complications.

THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT SURGERY IN SYDNEY

    Understanding the Procedure

What are the risks of gynaecomastia surgery?

During your initial consultations with the doctor, you will be informed in detail about the risks, side effects, and potential complications of male breast reduction surgery, and you will also discuss any questions or concerns you have. Potential side effects from gynaecomastia surgery with liposuction to consider can include but are not limited to:

    • Prolonged pain and aching
    • Bruising and bleeding
    • Persistent swelling
    • Infection
    • Asymmetry
    • Noticeable areola irregularities
    • Changes to nipple sensation which can be temporary or permanent
    • Poor or delayed wound healing resulting in undesirable scarring
    • Excess skin that does not retract
    • The need for revision procedures or reconstructive plastic surgery with a specialist plastic surgeon

Will I have scars after “man boobs” surgery?

Scarring is a normal side effect from having any surgical treatment, including after a male breast reduction procedure with liposuction. Depending on the individual and their scarring history, the small incisions will fade with time, with the use of specialised silicone scar gels during healing also being recommended.

What happens if my enlarged breasts return?

Liposuction surgery removes unwanted excess fat but is not a surgical procedure for weight loss. It is important to maintain healthy lifestyle choices to help your gynaecomastia not come back after having male breast reduction surgery.

If you do find that your “man boobs” return, you can discuss more treatment options and other types of surgery with the doctor, which may include a second gyno surgery to remove further excess fat and excess breast tissue.

What age do I need to be to have surgery?

Whilst unwanted excess breast tissue can develop during male adolescence, it is not always the result of a hormonal imbalance but can often be a part of normal hormone fluctuations. The appearance of teenage “man boobs” often resolves without intervention following puberty, and our doctors always recommend patients wait until they are 18 years or older, before considering having gynaecomastia surgery.

Certain medical conditions can contribute to the growth of excess fat, increased glandular tissue, and enlarged breasts in men, the recommended treatment options will always be dependent on your individual circumstances.
